Lady Bulldogs host Alcorn State to close out non-conference play

STARKVILLE – Following a 10-day layoff, the Mississippi State women’s basketball team will hit the floor Wednesday, taking on Alcorn State to close out its non-conference portion of the 2009-10 schedule. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Braves will tip at 7 p.m. CT at the Humphrey Coliseum.

Mississippi State (8-4) enters Wednesday’s contest having won four of its last five games. The Lady Bulldogs also sport a 7-0 home record this year and have a scoring margin of +38.6 in the confines of the Humphrey Coliseum this season.

Senior guard Alexis Rack continues to pace the Lady Bulldogs in scoring, averaging an SEC second-best 19.8 points a game. A two-time SEC Player of the Week this season, Rack has scored in double figures in 26 consecutive games. Armelie Lumanu (12.5), Tysheka Grimes (11.6) and Mary Kathryn Govero (10.3) are also averaging double-digit scoring.

As a team, Mississippi State currently ranks fifth in both scoring offense and scoring defense among SEC squads. Overall, the Lady Bulldogs have a +18.6 scoring margin which ranks 21st nationally. Dating back to the home closing win over South Carolina last season, the Lady Bulldogs will be looking to extend an eight-game home winning streak.

Alcorn State enters Wednesday’s game with an 0-8 record this season. Coached by Tonya Edwards, the Lady Braves are led in scoring by sophomore guard Kiara Ruffin who is averaging 13.3 points a game.

The matchup will be just the ninth between the two programs and the first since 1985. State holds a 6-2 advantage in the series and a 3-1 ledger in games played in Starkville. State holds a 49-16 mark all-time against SWAC opponents and currently hold a 19-game win streak against teams in the league. The Lady Bulldogs are 2-0 this season against SWAC teams which included a season-opening victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and a win over Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 16.

Following Wednesday’s game, Mississippi State travels to Auburn for a Jan. 3 matchup to open conference play.
