PINE GROVE–Tuesday, the Pine Grove Lady Panthers’ hopes to advance in the MHSAA fast-pitch softball playoffs were dashed with a 21-3 setback to the West Union Eagles.
The lack of base hits and numerous errors spelled doom for the Lady Panthers (10-11). While being held hitless by West Union’s Dani Taylor, they watched the Lady Eagles bang out 19 hits of their own. The Lady Panthers were also charged with five errors, a glaring stat that Head Coach Brad Pounders recognized as a major factor leading up to the loss.
amp”I don’t know if my girls were nervous, but we made four or five errors, amp” said Pounders. amp”It was six to nothing after two innings, and I think all of them were unearned. West Union hit the ball hard, but we should have been out of the inning before those hits took place.
amp”We were just beat from the get-go. We had too many errors early and they hit the ball really well, ran the bases really well, and pitched really well. They even out-coached us in every area.amp”
The Lady Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, but managed to score only one run in the final three innings.
Despite the Lady Panthers’ sour end to the 2008 playoffs, Pounders took solace in the team’s overall success in his first year.
amp”We improved the win/loss record, got past the first round and had game three of the second round of the playoffs on our field, but we just fell short, amp” added Pounders.
The Lady Panthers advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a first round sweep of Hickory Flat. Last Saturday, they split game one and two with West Union in second round action, which led to Tuesday’s deciding game three.
