BLUE MOUNTAIN – Blue Mountain College held off a last-minute run by Williams Baptist College here Tuesday night to claim a 79-78 victory. The Lady Toppers improved their record to 7-7.
“This was a good win for us,” said BMC coach Lavon Driskell. “We’ve lost a couple of close games this year and it feels good to come out on the winning side.”
Joy Pierce and Katelynn Wright each scored 14 points for the Lady Toppers, and Samantha Burns had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Anna Lisa Powell scored 9 points for BMC and Kayla Morris also had 7 rebounds to go with her 5 points.
For the Lady Eagles, 7-6, Olivia Morris led all scorers with 24 points; Courtney Sublett had 14, Jessica Shepard had 13 and Rachel Looney scored 10.
In the men’s game, BMC fell to 0-16 on the year as Williams Baptist took a 93-90 victory. Lakendrick McCullum scored 25 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the Toppers. Josh McCalmon had 14, Mike Chatham 13 and Renell Collins scored 11. The Eagles, 8-5, were led by Marcus Massey with 19 points and DeVarrio Watson with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
BMC begins play in the TranSouth Athletics Conference on Thursday when it travels to Henderson, Tenn., to take on Freed-Hardeman University in a women-men doubleheader that begins at 6 p.m.
