MHSAA officials are expecting a close battle today between Tupelo and Oxford in the state swim meet at the Biloxi Natatorium.
Oxford’s girls are the two-time defending state champions, but lost by two points to Tupelo last week in Jackson in the North Mississippi meet.
The Lady Wave has won seven state championships, the last in 2006.
Tupelo swimmer Hannah Wilson, who has won 14 individual state titles, believes the team championship could be decided by the final relay – the 400-yard freestyle. THS finished second to Madison Central in the event last week while Oxford was third. The second-place finish gave the Wave the deciding points in the team standings.
“It was too close,” Wilson said.
Tupelo’s boys, who were a solid winner at last week’s North meet, are the favorites to capture their third consecutive state team championship.
Oak Grove boys and girls won the South state titles. Teams from Amory, Ripley, Starkville and West Point are also entered in today’s meet.
