JACKSON — A weekend shooting in Jackson killed a 17-year-old Lanier High School athlete.
Jackson police say Deronnie Spencer was riding in a friend’s car when the shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. Saturday. Officers said the teen was shot in the head, neck and chest. He died Sunday morning.
The identity of the driver of the car has not been released. Police said they had identified people of interest in connection with the case but they have not released any names of suspects and no arrests have been reported.
Spencer played football and basketball at Lanier, where a candlelight vigil was held Sunday night.
“I just can’t believe it happened. Not to him. He didn’t mess with nobody. I don’t know why someone would want to hurt an innocent person,” said Spencer’s cousin Laquita Spencer.
His coaches described him as a team leader.
“He was going to be a leader on the team, not just the sports guy, but the guy that made everyone else click,” basketball coach Thomas Billups said.
“He was a motivational leader and one of the most talented kids I had on the team. He will be missed severely,” football coach Damion Longino said.
