As of Wednesday, Saltillo coach Charles Covington had 1,200 runners and 31 schools signed up for Saturday’s annual Saltillo Cross Country Invitational.
“We could have as many as 35 schools,” he said. “It’s going to be bigger than last year.”
Joining Saltillo, Tupelo, TCPS, Pontotoc, Oxford, Myrtle and others in the field will be two teams from Alabama – Hatton and Speake. Covington was hoping to hear from a couple of Jackson, Tenn., teams today.
“This meet has grown,” he said. “We appreciate the support we get from our local teams. There are other places they could go this week and they’re coming here.”
Covington’s booster club and 75 volunteers keep the meet running. The junior high divisions will kick off the meet at 9 and 9:30 a.m. The final race is scheduled for 11:30 and features the 4-6A boys.
Saltillo’s girls team is the defending state champion in Class 5A.
