Local Football Roundup: Cruber-to-Jernigan combo leads Nettleton

Nettleton senior quarterback Dakota Cruber connected with wide receiver Levert Jernigan for three touchdown passes Friday to lead the Tigers to a 22-14 season-opening road victory over Baldwyn.

Cruber’s first two touchdown strikes covered 72 and 24 yards in the second quarter to give Nettleton a 15-0 lead.

His third scoring pass to Jernigan was a 53-yarder in the third quarter to answer a 7-yard scoring run by Baldwyn’s Tyran Shinault.

Duke Upshaw scored Baldwyn’s second touchdown with a 6-yard run in the third quarter.

Nettleton, coached by Mike Scott, finished 2-9 last season.

OXFORD 32, JACKSON PREP 20: QB Jack Abraham threw TD passes of 19 yards to D.K. Metcalf and 7 yards to Zach Cousar to lead the MHSAA Chargers to a win against the MAIS Patriots. K.T. McCollin and Jarius Barnes added rushing TDs for Oxford.

MARSHALL ACADEMY 56, KIRK 14: QB Dakota Dailey accounted for 290 yards total offense and four TDs to lead Marshall.
Dailey had scoring runs of 45 and 37 yards and threw TD strikes of 32 yards to Colt Lindsey and 9 to Christian Compton. He had seven rushes for 138 yards. He was 6 of 10 passing for 152 yards.
RB Devin McGregor rushed for 126 yards and scored TDs on runs of 13 and 32 yards.

STARKVILLE 17, NOXUBEE COUNTY 0: In the battle of 2012 state champions, Starkville won a road game at 4A Noxubee County. The Yellow Jackets won last year’s 5A crown, but moved up to 6A this season.
QB Princeton Jones threw TD passes for 10 yards to Rafael Leonard and 26 yards to A.J. Brown. Michael Godley kicked a 28-yard field foal.

BOONEVILLE 35, WALNUT 7: Andrew Lambert scored on a 6-yard pass reception and a 29-year run in the first quarter to power the Blue Devils.
Booneville QB Jack Simpson accounted for three TDs, two passing and one on a 1-yard run. The other TD toss went 25 yards to Zane Lott. Elijah Tate added a 60-yard TD run for the Devils.

EAST UNION 40, HOULKA 6: Running back Blake Spruill scored on runs of 8 and 33 yards while QB D.J. Armstrong passed and ran for two scores to lead East Union.
Armstrong threw a 45-yard TD pass to Jacob Elder for the game’s first points. He added the final TD on a 6-yard run.

SMITHVILLE 7, BELMONT 0: Tyler Hood scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter for the Seminoles.

SOUTH PONTOTOC 40, HATLEY 8: Wesley Ross rushed for two TDs and passed for one to lead the Cougars.

EAST WEBSTER 53, VARDAMAN 6: The homestanding Wolverines spoiled coach Larry Gann’s return to Vardaman with a lopsided win.

LAMAR 35, STARKVILLE ACA. 3: The Vols lost their season opener on the road.
