Long wait for Houston seniors pays off with playoffs

HOUSTON – Seniors Shelby Whitt and Hanna Wilson didn’t want Houston’s double-header against Shannon on Tuesday to be the last slow-pitch game of their careers.
Whitt reached on a single and scored when Wilson ripped a single down the first-base line to break open a 2-2 game in the top of the third inning as the Lady Toppers rolled to a 12-2 Game 2 victory.
In the first game of the day, Houston picked up a 5-1 win to help secure its spot in postseason play.
The Lady Toppers will travel to Cleveland on Tuesday.
“We jumped on them early and I feel like that was key for us,” said Houston coach Keith Jernigan. “The girls really stepped and did their job of taking care of business to earn a spot in the playoffs.”
Houston only needed to split with Shannon to advance to the Class 4A North State Tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 2-4A after dropping a pair of region games the Amory earlier in the season.
In the nightcap, Whitt and junior Raven Hayes doubled to plate three runs each in an eight-run fourth.
“Making the playoffs was important to us this season and we are exciting about being in the playoffs, but we are going to have to be mentally ready to go and get a win on the road,” Whitt said.
Wilson finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, a run and a RBI. Whitt went 3-for-4 with a double, pair of singles, two runs, and 3 runs batted in.
“We’ve waited six years for this opportunity to be in the playoffs,” said Wilson. “It means the world to us to be in this position, with this being our last year.”
