LOOK AHEAD: Friday at the Vancouver Olympics

By The Associated Press

It’s the moment Vancouver’s been waiting for. The 2010 Olympics begin Friday with the opening ceremony — and a little ski jumping beforehand.

LIGHT THE LAMP: The biggest suspense, as always, is over who will light the Olympic flame. Hockey great Wayne Gretzky is a plausible choice, but we won’t know for sure until the athletes gather at BC Place. NBC will provide extensive coverage of the Olympics’ first indoor opening ceremony. The coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight on WTVA.

OFF AND JUMPING: Before the flame is even lit, the ski jumping competition will be underway. Qualifying on the normal hill starts Friday, and medals are awarded Saturday.

VONN OR OFF?: American Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn was more optimistic about her bruised shin Thursday after taking a quick run down the mountain. Her first race of the Olympics, the super-combined, is scheduled for Sunday. Stay tuned for more developments in a story that could overshadow even the opening ceremony.
