BOONEVILLE – For a third straight week, a Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball player has been named the state’s top performer by the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC).
Tanner Gaines, a right-handed pitcher from Baldwyn, garnered the MACJC Pitcher of the Week award for games played April 15-21.
Gaines tossed a complete game three-hitter to seal the Tigers’ berth in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Baseball Playoff as Northeast knocked off Itawamba 7-0 in Fulton on Saturday, April 20.
Gaines becomes the first Northeast pitcher to earn the Pitcher of the Week award while sophomores Will Robertson (Falkner) and Justin Neal (Southaven) were honored with Player of the Week awards April 1-7 and April 8-14, respectively.
Gaines faced trouble twice against the Indians and was able to get out of the jam both times.
Gaines registered a strikeout in the fourth after ICC had loaded the bases and induced a flyball to right field in the fifth to quell another Indian threat.
On the day against Itawamba, Gaines allowed just three hits while striking out four and pitched to just eight batters over the minimum while improving to 7-1 on the year.
On the year, Gaines leads the Tigers in wins and complete games.
A Mississippi State University transfer, Gaines has thrown four complete games while totaling 51.1 innings on the mound for the Tigers – also a team-leading statistic.
Gaines has allowed just eight earned runs on the year and averages 7.01 strikeouts per game with 40 strikeouts to just 15 walks on the season.
During his sophomore season in Booneville, Gaines has a team-leading 1.40 earn run average while appearing in 10 contests for the Tigers.
Gaines’ seven wins on the year rank the Baldwyn native sixth in the nation while his 1.40 ERA puts Gaines in the top 25 in the nation.
