The indoor pro football team that plans to play in Tupelo next winter has a head coach.
The Ultimate Indoor Football League announced Tuesday that Martino Theus will lead the team, which is scheduled to begin play in February at BancorpSouth Arena.
“Coach Theus brings enthusiasm and indoor football knowledge that will serve our expansion Tupelo franchise well,” UIFL president Andrew Haines said in a statement. “He has coached at the highest level of the arena game, and we are excited that he has decided to continue his coaching career in the UIFL.”
According to the news release, Theus served as defensive coordinator of the AFL’s Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings in 2010. A former Lambuth player, he’s currently a high school assistant coach at Jackson (Tenn.) Prep.
The UIFL signed a lease earlier this year with BCS Arena and may operate the team itself while looking for local investors.
“An announcement about the organization’s team name and color scheme will be forthcoming,” the news release said.
Five teams from last year’s inaugural UIFL season will be joined by at least eight expansion franchise for the 2012 season.
