McDonald shoots 72 to open Women’s Am

KPY7_djournal_stock_sports_golf_jisi_shaneCHARLESTON, S.C. – Mississippi State’s Ally McDonald was in fine shape after the first day of stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, shooting a 1-over 72 on Monday.

McDonald, a rising junior from Fulton, is looking to make the field of 64 for match play that begins on Wednesday at the Country Club of Charleston.

In Monday’s round, she had four birdies, three bogeys – all on par-3 holes – and a double bogey.

McDonald tees off at 6:50 a.m. today.

Ole Miss rising sophomore Abby Newton, with Rebels coach Michele Drinkard caddying, shot a 79 on Monday.

Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu led the field with a 69, the only sub-par round of the day.
