MDWFP: turkeys looking great in East Central, South West Mississippi

By The Associated Press

JACKSON — The state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks says this should be a great spring for turkey hunters in east central and southwest parts of Mississippi.

But the annual spring turkey report says hunters in the Delta should be cautious, because last year was the third in the past four that spring floods kept hens from nesting.

Turkey biologist Adam Butler tells the Clarion-Ledger that this year’s 2-year-olds may be the only adult males around in that area.

The 2011 spring turkey season was one of the worst in years. Butler says this year should be better.

The spring season opened March 15 and runs through May 1.
