Meridian stumbles

– The state’s top-ranked team, Meridian, was stunned 54-51 by
Natchez. Meridian rallied after falling behind 34-7.
Two other teams had close calls.
Second-ranked Olive Branch fought back to beat Southaven 31-28 and third-ranked Picayune edged Pearl River Central 21-20.
Fifth-ranked Noxubee County would have been happy to step up after whipping Kemper 45-0.

– Friday’s Newton game at West Lauderdale was cancelled after a Newton student apparently shot himself on Friday afternoon at the school with a .22-caliber handgun he brought to school in a backpack.

– In a matchup of 2A unbeatens, top-ranked Bassfield (6-0) beat second-ranked Tylertown 32-0.
