MISS. STATE RALLIES BY VANDY
By Chris Burrows
STARKVILLE Mississippi State’s Friday night late-inning magic at Dudy Noble Field claimed another SEC victim.
Staff ace Eric DuBose, striking out 15, benefitted again as the Bulldogs pushed across four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for an 8-4 win over Vanderbilt.
Last Friday night, the Bulldogs were within four outs of losing to Georgia before bouncing back to win 4-3.
“Yeah, I guess it was like last week,” said MSU coach Ron Polk, whose club continued to keep the pace at 9-4 in the SEC Western Division with Alabama and LSU. “The two things that impressed me was Eric really pitched well again and how cold it is.
“It’s April 5th and can you believe this weather?”
Both teams reflected a game played in temperatures that dropped into the low-40s and a wind chill factor below the freezing mark. The teams combined for 10 errors, five by each team and had another handful of mental mistakes that weren’t recorded in the scorebook.
“Offensively, we did a good job late of taking the ball back through the middle off (Vandy right-hander Ray) Ortiz,” Polk said. “We didn’t get a lot, but we put what we got together.”
The winning rally began on Brad Freeman’s single. Rob Hauswald, the team’s hottest hitter in the past week, doubled him home. Richard Lee reached on an error, allowing Hauswald to score.
After David Hayman walked, Blake Anderson roped a double to the right field corner, clearing the bases to finish the rally. DuBose coasted in the ninth inning to wrap up the complete game decision.
Vanderbilt took advantage of four errors to push across runs in the first and fifth innings. Clinton Johnson drove in a pair of runs, while Glenn Davis and Tydus Meadows added an RBI single apiece.
The Bulldogs countered with three runs in the third inning, highlighted by a Vanderbilt error that sandwiched a sacrifice fly by Freeman and a run-scoring single from Hauswald.
Mississippi State tied it 4-4 in the bottom of sixth inning after Hauswald reached on an error. One batter later, Hayman singled home Hauswald and set up the eighth inning burst.
