MSU football players set to appear in court

STARKVILLE – Six Mississippi State University football players accused of assaulting an off-duty police officer are scheduled to appear in City Court on Monday.

The arrests stem from an incident at a downtown Starkville club April 2 when a group of men attacked off-duty officer Demetric Armstead, Starkville Police Department records show.

The football players arrested – Derek A. Pegues, 19, Batesville; Keith Fitzhugh, 19 of Hampton, Ga.; Michael J. Gates, 18, of Fairburn, Ga.; Charles J. Burns, 19, of Hattiesburg; Quinton L. Wesley, 19, of Atlanta; and Quintraveous Rutland, 19, of Decatur, Ga. – have been released from the Oktibbeha County Jail each on a $25,000 bond.

If convicted of the felony charge, each faces up to a $1,000 fine and five years in prison.
