West Point, Miss.,– Paced by four Bulldog scorecards in the Top 20, Mississippi State overtook UAB on the final hole to claim first place after the opening day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
The No. 28 Bulldogs shot a 1-under-par, 575 to edge out the Blazers on Monday, giving State another opportunity to pick up a win. If MSU holds on in the final round, it would be the fourth win of the season, the most since 1974-1975.
“We got off to a great start to start the day,” Coach Clay Homan said. “After that we started making some mental mistakes, which were uncharacteristic of us. So we will need to play much better tomorrow if we want to win.”
State closed out round one in fourth place, behind South Alabama’s 5-under-par pace. Homan’s squad golfed one of the best scores of the second round (288) however, to overtake the field for the top spot.
MSU finished day one with four Bulldogs in the Top 20. Juniors Axel Boasson and Chad Ramey are in the Top 10 range after 36 holes. Boasson is currently tied for fourth-place with his 2-under-par day.
