Mississippi State will play at Loyolaof Chicago in basketball on Dec. 15, in commemoration of the teams’ historic 1963 NCAAtournament game.
The Bulldogs and Ramblers met in EastLansing, Mich., on March 15, 1963. MSU coach Babe McCarthy had to sneak hisall-white team out of town in defiance of an injunction by the Mississippilegislature due to the fact that Loyola had black players on its team.
Loyola won the 1963 meeting 61-51 at MichiganState’s Jenison Field House behind 20 points from Jerry Harkness. In 2008, theNCAA named the game as one of 25 “defining moments” in the first 100 years ofcollege basketball.
Thisyear’s game will take place at Joseph J. GentileArena on the Loyola campus. Thetwo teams will meet at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville on a to-be-announceddate in 2013.
