MEMPHIS – Mississippi State kept alive its chance of finishing the season with a .500 record, beating Memphis 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon at AutoZone Park.
MSU, which has won 11 of its last 12 meetings with Memphis, closes its season with a three-game homestand against SEC leader LSU, starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs (24-27) got six innings of two-hit, shutout relief on Tuesday from junior Justin Bussey (2-2), who struck out six with no walks after coming on with his team trailing 5-3. It was the longest outing of his MSU career.
Cody Freeman hit a pair of home runs – a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the sixth that tied it at 5.
MSU’s Ryan Duffy broke the tie in the eighth inning with a towering pinch-hit solo home run to right field – his ninth of the season.
MSU out-hit Memphis 10-9.
