MSU signs Tupelo's Scribner

Daily Journal, wire reports

STARKVILLE – Tupelo High School distance runner Robert Scribner has signed a national letter-of-intent with Mississippi State University track and field program.

“We are happy to sign the No. 1 distance runner in the state of Mississippi in Robert,” MSU associate track and field coach Steve Dudley said. “This solidifies us getting the No. 1 distance recruit the past two years out of the state. (Tupelo's) Brett Marlin was the top last year, and both were part of the same high school team.”

Scribner has been a member of the Golden Wave's Class 5A cross country state championship team for the past three seasons. A three-time All-State honoree, he won the individual crown at the 2003 State Cross Country Championship with his personal best time of 15 minutes, 39.23 seconds.

“I'm proud to sign with such a great program as Mississippi State,” Scribner said. “It will be incredible to run with such talented athletes, especially my former teammate, Brett Marlin.”

Scribner holds THS records in the 3,200 meters and the 5K. He also holds cross country course records in Pontotoc, Saltillo, Tupelo and Oxford.

Off the track, he is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, the Key Club and is a six-ime Rotary Scholar honoree. He is also the 2003 Mathematical Association of America AMC 12 competition winner.

He plans to major in business at MSU.
