MSU’s Alwal shares SEC’s top defensive honor

Mississippi State’s Martha Alwal received three honors from the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday.

The junior center was selected as the league’s Co-Defensive Player of the year as well as to the conference’s All-Defensive team, and she was a first team All-SEC selection.

Alwal led the conference in blocked shots with 2.6 per game and enjoyed career highs in both points (15.5) and shooting percentage (50.3). The Worthington, Minn., native also finished third in the SEC with 8.9 rebounds.

Alwal is the only player in school history with 900 points, 700 rebounds and 200 blocked shots in her career. She shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Texas A&M’s Jordan Jones.

Joining Alwal with SEC honors is teammate Breanna Richardson, who was selected for the All-Freshman team. Richardson averaged 9.1 points and 5.4 boards as a rookie.

Ole Miss had two players – Tia Faleru and Valencia McFarland – picked on the All-SEC second team.
