STARKVILLE, Miss. – A home run in each of Mississippi State’s three games in last weekend’s SEC series sweep at Texas A&M powered Bulldog junior outfielder Hunter Renfroe to the forefront of the conference’s home run charts at the midway point of the 2013 SEC baseball season. It also helped the Crystal Springs, Miss., native earn his first SEC Player of the Week accolade, the Southeastern Conference announced Monday.
Renfroe now has 13 fence-clearing swings this season to share the top spot in the SEC and rank tied for second in the NCAA in home runs. He hit .571 on the weekend with three multi-hit games, including back-to-back three-hit showings as State clinched its first SEC road series sweep since 2011. He added a pair of doubles and finished with a 1.357 slugging percentage for the weekend. It marked the second time this season Renfroe has homered in each game of a three-game SEC series.
Half of his 54 hits have gone for extra bases and he now leads the NCAA with a .865 slugging percentage.
Tennessee senior right-hander Zack Godley fired a six-hit complete-game shutout to earn SEC Pitcher of the Week honors while Florida rookie outfielder Harrison Bader hit .462 to take SEC Freshman of the Week laurels.
Mississippi State (30-9/8-7 SEC) is 7-1 in the month of April and ranked 10th in the latest USA TODAY Sports coaches poll. The Bulldogs open a three-game Super Bulldog Weekend series against SEC West rival Auburn (22-14/5-10 SEC) Thursday at Dudy Noble Field. The game has a 6:30 p.m. start and will be televised nationally as part of the SEC’s Thursday Night Game of the Week series on ESPNU. In conjunction with the game, Chevron is sponsoring a T-shirt giveaway to all fans attending Thursday’s series-opener. A fireworks display will be held at the conclusion of the game.
