MSU's Schmidt hospitalized after cardiac arrest

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State’s director of track and field Al Schmidt has been transported to Athens Regional Medical Center after going into cardiac arrest on Thursday during the Southeastern Conference Championships in Athens, Ga.

University officials say the 60-year-old Schmidt received two shocks from an automated external defibrillator at the track, but was alert as he was transported to the hospital. Officials say he is expected to undergo bypass surgery on Monday.

Schmidt is in his 23rd season with Mississippi State’s track and field program. He spent the first 22 years as the head coach before being named director of track and field in August.
