MSU's Smith out for season with broken finger

By The Associated Press

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State backup guard Shaun Smith will miss the remainder of the season after breaking the middle finger in his right hand during Saturday’s loss to Alabama.

The 6-foot-6, 203-pound sophomore appeared in just 10 games this season, scoring nine points, but was beginning to earn a bigger role because starting guard Rodney Hood is also out with a bruised knee. Smith will have surgery on Wednesday to insert a pin in the broken finger, which is on his shooting hand.

The Bulldogs (19-10, 6-8 Southeastern Conference) will try to end a five-game losing streak when they travel to face South Carolina (10-18, 2-12) on Wednesday.
