STARKVILLE – Every coach has reason for anxiety this time of year, but Dan Mullen seems to find it in the strangest of places.
His third season as Mississippi State’s head coach kicks off a week from today at Memphis, and it’s time the depth chart start getting settled. So are there any positions Mullen is particularly confident in or worried about?
“I’m worried about every position, but I’m confident in our guys,” Mullen said following Wednesday’s practice. “That’s tough for me, because I panic about everything. I’m panicked about our tailbacks, and you probably wouldn’t think that. I’m panicked about our quarterbacks.”
With Vick Ballard and LaDarius Perkins at tailback, and Chris Relf at quarterback, those should be two positions of little concern.
The focus this week is shifting toward Memphis, with “wholesale” game prep starting Friday.
Wednesday’s work focused on red-zone situations, and the coach offered praise to both the offense and defense.
More important to Mullen was the effort he saw.
“We kind of got after them a little bit after yesterday’s practice that we would need to see a certain level of effort out there when we practice, and we saw it today. That’s what I was pleased with.”
