NEMCC men's basketball inks a pair of Booneville products

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College men’s basketball fans will see some familiar faces on the court when the 2012-13 Tigers take to Bonner Arnold Coliseum.

Men’s basketball coach David Robbins has announced the first two of his 2012-13 signing class and both hail from Booneville High School.

Booneville’s Keldrick Lesley and Darius Leach both agreed to become Tigers at a signing ceremony held on the Northeast campus late last week.

Lesley and Leach both helped lead Booneville back to “The Big House” – Mississippi Coliseum – in Jackson for the 2011-12 Class 3A State Championship game after guiding the Blue Devils to a Class 3A title in 2010-11 against division foe Corinth.

During the last two seasons, Lesley and Leach have been responsible for nearly 60 wins in a Blue Devil uniform with Booneville posting a 31-4 mark during the 2011-12season and a 28-7 record during the 2010-11 year.

Lesley, who was recently named the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal’s Player of the Year, led the Blue Devils with 14.9 points per game and was second on the team in three other statistical categories – assists, rebounds and steals.

In his final season in the blue and gold, Lesley averaged 4.7 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per contest and 1.6 steals per outing while breaking the 500-point barrier with 522.

Lesley scored a season-high 26 points against Okolona on November 10, 2011 with a 12-for-19 performance from the floor. In the Class 3A State Championship game, Lesley scored his second-highest output of the season – 24 points – against Kemper County.

Lesley broke the 20-point barrier nine times during the 2011-12 season and the Blue Devils were 7-2 when the Booneville senior scored 20 points or more.

During the 2011-12 season, Lesley shot 70-percent from the charity stripe (101-of-144) and dealt out over 100 assists from his guard position and had just 70 turnovers on the year.

In addition to his 100 assists, Lesley finished with three double-doubles – all-coming in a month’s time.

Lesley began his double-double month with a 21-point, 10-rebound night in an 87-52 win against Bruce on December 29 before turning the trick against Wheeler with a 17-point, 10-rebound effort on January 13. Lesley capped the month with a 13-point, 10-rebound, 7-assist game in a 75-50 win over Ripley on January 27.

Leach was the floor general for the Blue Devils from his point guard position. In 35 games during the 2011-12 season, Leach tallied 8.8 points a game and filled up the boxscore with 5.6 assists per outing, 2.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game for Booneville.

Whilepassing out approximately 200 assists on the year, Leach was also responsible for 308 points for the Blue Devils.

In 24 of Booneville 35 games on the season, Leach dished out five assists or more with his high being 11 against Cleveland East Side to open the season on November 5, 2011.

Leachpoured in a season-high 20 points against Aberdeen on December 30, 2011 andtallied double digits 16 times during the season for the Blue Devils.

In addition to his 20 points against Aberdeen, Leach recorded a pair of double-doubles from his point guard position. In the season opener against Cleveland East Side on November 5, 2011, Leach tallied 10 points to go along with 11 assists in a 55-49 win against the Trojans.

In a 59-55 win against Bailey Magnet on February 24, Leach finished with his second double-double of the year when the Blue Devil scored 14 points and dished out 10 assists in the four-point decision against the Knights.

In addition to his nearly 200 assists, Leach came away with 84 steals on the year for Booneville and shot 79-percent from the free throw line knocking down 84 of his 106 attempts.
