New Albany baseball standout signs with Northeast

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College head baseball coach Kent Farris has signed Corey Smith from New Albany High School to join the Northeast baseball program for the 2010-11 season.

Smith committed to the play for the Tigers back in January when Coach Farris held the signee/commitment recognition ceremony at Bonner Arnold Coliseum but he took it a step further on April Fools Day.

However, it wasn’t a joke and now Smith, who helped lead John Walker’s New Albany Bulldogs with a .417 batting average, 48 runs batted in, while knocking around a dozen doubles during the 2008-09 campaign, along with three triples and five homeruns will officially be a Tiger upon graduation.

“We are really excited about getting Smith to sign with us,” said Farris. “It is always good to sign some local talent…. especially when they come from such a good program like the one that is at New Albany. We look forward in seeing him grow and mature on the field and we can’t wait to get him here.”
