The No. 13 Tennessee women’s basketball team visits Mississippi State tonight and Ole Miss on Sunday – perhaps the last chance for fans here to see Pat Summitt on the bench.
Today’s game in Starkville tips off at 8 p.m. and will be seen on CSS. Mississippi State is winless in all 32 previous meetings with the Lady Vols, including an 81-55 loss in Knoxville last season.
Summitt, 59, announced last August that she was facing a diagnosis of early onset dementia. As this season has progressed, she has turned more and more responsibility to her assistants. Associate head coach Holly Warlick has taken the lead on the bench and in huddles during games.
“She still gets up and has a voice when we need to make a point,” Warlick said recently.
“She may pick and choose when she does, but when she does, it’s pretty powerful.”
The Lady Vols (18-7, 9-3 SEC) have lost 3 of their last 7 but are coming off a 91-54 win at home against No. 7 Kentucky, which leads the SEC standings.
Tennessee visits Ole Miss on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. tipoff.
