Northeast baseball players selected to the Sonic All-Star game

BOONEVILLE – Northeast Mississippi Community College will have three former members of the Tiger baseball team participating in the Bank of New Albany (BNA) Bank Cotton States League Sonic All-Star game and Home Run Derby on Saturday, July 18, at Legion Field inside the New Albany Sportsplex.

The Tiger trio consists of Ben Wallis (Ripley)–who is listed as a utility player–along with pitchers Jon Andy Scott (Booneville) and Brad Luna (New Albany) who both pitched for Northeast during the 2009 campaign. The three Tigers will play for the North squad known as the Tallahatchie Rascals.

Two former Northeast Tigers were selected to play for the North squad, Drew Dillard, out-fielder (now at Belhaven), and M.J. McWhorter, out-fielder (now at Jackson State). McWhorter has also been selected to participate in the Home Run Derby.

Coach Chris Basil will be coaching the league-leading Rascals for the North Division as they take on the Central Division squad led by former Mississippi State and professional player Pete Young. Rascal’s assistants Buddy Hall and Tom Spencer will be on Coach Basil’s All-Star staff along with other league coaches to be named later.

The game will be broadcast on 96.3, ESPN Radio and streamed live on the internet through the league website at www.cottonstatesleague.com. The Home Run Derby begins at 1:00 p.m. and the All-Star game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
