BOONEVILLE – Northeast Mississippi Community College Tiger baseball team and former Tigers still young at heart will take to the diamond at Harold T. White Field on Saturday, October 20 for Northeast’s third alumni baseball game.
Northeast head baseball coach Kent Farris kicked off the bi-annual baseball series in2008 as a way of connecting the program to its roots and events in 2008 and 2010 have been a success.
Registration for the third alumni baseball game will begin at 9 a.m. at the Tigers home field – Harold T. White Field – inside Booneville City Park on Saturday, October 20.
Batting practice will begin 30 minutes after registration at 9:30 a.m. with the current and former Tigers taking the diamond at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Participating players will also be recognized before the Northeast Tiger football team takes on the Itawamba Indians for Homecoming 2012.
Since the alumni game spans the usual lunchtime, Farris is offering participatingplayers and their families a barbecue plate for $10 per person and that price also includes admission into the Northeast football game.
While the alumni get one more chance to don the black and gold and take the baseball diamond, Farris uses the alumni game to evaluate the talent of the 2012-13 Tiger baseball team.
With the number of competitions against other schools reduced in the fall, Farris uses the alumni game as a way to get in a full scrimmage for his Tigers.
During the first-ever event, player from five decades (1950s-2000s) stepped onto Harold T. White Field at Booneville City Park.
Although no score was kept during that first contest, the two teams battled it out with each team using a variety of pitchers ranging from the 1970s through the 2008 season to try to quell the opposition.
A contingent of players from the 1962 State Championship team along with head coach Hal Hughes made the day memorable by presenting Farris with the 1962 State Championship trophy and a photo of the championship team.
