Northeast-Holmes contest selected for 'Game of the Week'; Tigers break into National Football poll

BOONEVILLE – Northeast Mississippi Community College’s football game against Holmes Community College has been selected to be the Game of the Week for the fourth week of the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) football season.

Northeast (3-0, 1-0 in North Division) will also be carrying a new number 19 ranking into the Game of the Week as the Tigers were ranked in the Top 20 in the country when the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its national football poll on Tuesday, September 20.

Northeast was one of six Mississippi school to receive votes in the NJCAA Top 20 Football Poll with North Division opponents East Mississippi and Northwest checking in as the nation’s fourth and ninth best teams, respectively. South Division teams Mississippi Gulf Coast (13), Pearl River (15) and Hinds (receiving votes) round out the Magnolia State’s football dominance of the national poll.’s Game of the Week features two of the state’s best teams squaring off on the gridiron. featured East Mississippi and Mississippi Gulf Coast in the opener for the 2011 season and followed by Pearl River at Itawamba while last week’s Game of the Week showcased Hinds at Copiah-Lincoln.

Northeast and Holmes’ division affair will be the first North Division rivalry game to be shown as ‘Game of the Week.’ was founded in early 2010 to give the MACJC national exposure and also offers in-depth information that a regular football fan would not receive.

Scoring updates are also available during each MACJC game and the website also includes links to each of the MACJC host schools, stories, statistics and standings to help fans garner the information they need about the league.

During the 2010 season, the Tigers were chosen for one Game of the Weekwith the Tigers facing off against the Rangers of Northwest Mississippi in the fifth week of the season after Northeast opened the season up 3-1.

Northeast’s perfect record marks the first time since the 2005 season that the Tigers have been unblemished through the third week of the season. In 2005, Northeast opened up a Hurricane Katrina-shortened season 7-0.

During the 2005 season, Northeast was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country and the Tigers have enjoyed a ranking resurgence under fourth-year head coach Ricky Smither.

In the 2010 season, Northeast broke into the NJCAA Top 20 Football Poll on October 19 at No. 18 after the Tigers posted a 5-2 mark following a 31-17 homecoming win over Coahoma on Saturday, October 16, 2010.

Prior to the 2010 ranking, Northeast’s last ranking was during the 2006 pre-season poll where the Tigers were picked as the No. 17 team in the country following a 7-2 2005 season.
