BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College softball program continues to garner student-athletes from some of the Magnolia State’s most successful programs.

Houston’s Avery Springer and Yasmeen Cooper agreed to become Lady Tigers at a ceremony at the Chickasaw County based high school on Thursday, May 23.

“The biggest thing about Avery and Yasmeen is that they come from a program that is used to winning,” said Northeast head softball coach Jody Long. “Anytime you get kids from a program that are used to winning that bleeds over into your program.”

During their four years as Lady Hilltoppers, Springer and Cooper helped lead Keith Jernigan’s clubs to a 110-20 overall record and a 35-1 mark in division play while winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) Class 4A State Championship in 2011-12 and returning to the Class 4A state championship game in 2012-13.

Cooper and Springer posted a 50-4 mark at home since 2009-10 and almost matched that total with a 43-8 record on the road.

Springer and Cooper were also responsible for one of the most offensive-minded teams in the state leading the Lady Hilltoppers to 1,094 runs over the last four years while yielding just 417.

During their senior season at Houston, Springer and Cooper led the Lady Hilltoppers to 315 runs while allowing just 163 on the year en route to a 26-8 overall record and a Class 4A state runner-up finish.

In the 2011-12 season, Houston finished 34-2 overall and a perfect 12-0 at home while chasing down the Class 4A state championship trophy.

Springer posted a .397 batting average for her last four years at Houston High School and finished with 138 hits in 348 at bats. Cooper posted a .367 batting average for her final four years at Houston High School and finished with 112 hits in 305 at bats.

“Yasmeen brings a lot of speed to our program and Avery is a competitor,” Long said. “Both of these kids do not like to lose and they show that in their play.”

Springer ended her senior season with a .449 batting average and had a .528 on base percentage after drawing 11 walks on the year. Cooper culminated her varsity career with a .452 average and a .558 on base percentage after picking up 16 walks in her final season as a Lady Hilltopper.

Both Cooper and Springer were named to the Division 3-4A All Division team and were selected as an a Northeast Mississippi All-Star Player.

“We are very excited about having Avery and Yasmeen joining our program next year,” Long added.

Cooper picked up a Class 4A All-State selection while Springer garnered the team’s leadership award for the 2012-13 season.

Cooper was named the team’s most improved player for the 2012-13 year while Springer was honored as the team’s academic achiever for having a 99 average on a 100 scale during the year.

While at Houston High School, Springer was a member of Lady Hilltopper cheerleading squad, a member of the Anchor Club and a Beta club member.

Cooper was a homecoming maid during her time at Houston High School and a member of the A&B Honor Roll with a 3.02 grade point average.
