NOTEBOOK: Area well-represented at Miss.-Ala. Classic

MOBILE, Ala. – Northeast Mississippi was represented with five players in the 2009 Alabama – Mississippi All-Star Classic. Itawmaba running back Deshaun McGaughy carried the ball three times for four yards. Shannon Mcgaughy carried three times and picked up one yard.
On defense, Itawamba defensive back Asian Ruff had an interception he returned for 17 yards and fellow DB Jamerson Love of Aberdeen recorded a solo tackle and just missed two interceptions. West Point’s Curtis Virges manned the defensive line.

Famous Eyes
- The 2009 all-stars watched the game in front of two Southeastern Conference legends. Former Alabama All-American and 1992 national championship team member John Copeland and former Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints star Deuce McAllister served as honorary team captains.

Pipeline to the Pros
- A total of 17 first round NFL draft picks have played in the Classic, including Mississippi State’s Eric Moulds, Ole Miss’ McAllister and Chris Spencer and Alcorn’s Steve McNair.

SEC Connections
- A total of 84 players who played in the Classic from 2005 to 2008 were listed on the rosters of the 12 SEC teams during the 2009 season, including John Jerry of Ole Miss and Anthony Dixon of Mississippi State.
