NOTEBOOK: Not much charity at stripe for Lions

JACKSON – Biggersville could have ended its 61-55 MHSAA Class 1A semifinal win against South champion West Lincoln a little earlier. But the Lions made only 3 of 12 shots from the free throw line in the final 62 seconds.
They also missed their only two shots in the span. Biggersville coach Cliff Little isn’t overly concerned about it with Coldwater coming up again in the championship game.
“We’ve iced games on free throw line,” Little said. “We don’t talk about that a lot. Even pros sometimes don’t make them. But we’ve made them all year and I’m very confident that we will next time.”
Amite County, a 71-59 loser to New Site in Friday’s Class 2A state tournament semifinals, had two freshmen and an eighth grader in its starting lineup.
“I can’t be mad; I’m tickled to death with the way we played,” coach Marcus Flippin said.
One of the rookies, BreAshlee Jones, led the team with 19 points. Another one, center Destiny Williams, scored 13 points and recorded 10 rebounds.
“I fully expect to have to play them and deal with them for years to come,” New Site coach Byron Sparks said.
Hinds AHS coach Bruce Baker made sure Ashland’s leading scorer, Alontra Tucker, wasn’t going to beat him in Friday’s 1A semifinals game.
Baker used a box-and-one on Tucker, who was averaging 25 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and seven steals per game.
Hinds, with Croatia Williams guarding, held her to seven points and three of those came late.
“We knew she was their scorer and carried their team,” Baker said.
“We denied her the ball and made her work for everything she got.”
H.W. Byers could win its fifth state championship in six years next week with its leading scorer sidelined.
Senior 5-foot-11 guard Madison McCreless, who has averaged a team-high 16 points per game, suffered a foot injury in the North Mississippi tournament.
She was dressed out but didn’t play in Friday’s semifinals win against Bogue Chitto.
Her status for next week’s title game against Hinds AHS is uncertain.
