XFORD – Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt liked what he saw from his quarterbacks Thursday, an upgrade from a less consistent performance a day earlier.
“Barry (Brunetti) and Randall Mackey threw the ball extremely well today. We’re excited about it. We’re not there yet by any means, but we’re working on it.”
Brunetti and Mackey are competing for the starting job along with Zack Stoudt. Brunetti, the sophomore transfer from West Virginia, has held the edge early in camp.
More production from the passing game equates to more production from the receivers, freshman Donte Moncrief had a pair of touchdown catches.
Nutt also singled out the play of junior college transfer Philander Moore, who had a handful of catches and also gained 15 yards on a sweep.
While the offensive line is considered the strength of the team, at least one freshman, Aaron Morris, is pushing for playing time.
The Rebels will be back on the field today preparing for Saturday’s workout, the first major scrimmage of camp.
The scrimmage begins at 6 p.m., at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and is open to the public.
