Ole Miss' Buckner tabbed SEC freshman of the week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After helping Ole Miss to wins over UTEP and Centenary, Ole Miss forward Reginald Buckner was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Buckner averaged 9.5 points on 88.9 percent shooting from the field to go with 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in leading the Rebels to the pair of wins. He registered a season-high 11 points (5-of-6 from the field) to go with six rebounds and three blocks in the 91-81 OT win over UTEP, including four points and a block to help the Rebels jump out to a 12-2 lead in the opening four minutes. He added eight points, four boards and three blocks in just 11 minutes of action in Saturday’s 108-64 blowout against the Gents.

The Memphis native ranks third in the SEC and first among freshmen with 2.5 blocks per game.

Buckner is the first Rebel to earn a weekly honor from the SEC this season and the first freshman of the week selection since Terrico White on March 9 last season.
The No. 15 Rebels travel to No. 6 West Virginia on Wednesday for a nationally televised non-league showdown in Morgantown. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will air live on ESPN2.
