Ole Miss, MSU women meet in Oxford tonight

OleMissLogoOXFORD – The Ole Miss women’s basketball team is hoping to find some homecourt help to duplicate its effort the last time its state rivals visited Tad Smith Coliseum.

The Rebels (9-10, 0-5 SEC) and Mississippi State meet tonight at 6 with Ole Miss trying to win in the SEC for the first time under new coach Matt Insell and to snap a 10-game conference losing streak.

8TB6_MSU_primary_logoThe last time Ole Miss won an SEC game it did so handily, defeating MSU 65-51 last Feb. 14.

MSU, under second-year coach Vic Schaefer, went 13-1 in non-conference play but enters tonight’s game just 1-4 in the league, its lone win 54-50 at Arkansas.

It was at Arkansas this past Sunday that Ole Miss almost ended its streak. Valencia McFarland scored 25 points, and the Rebels led with less than 4 minutes remaining but lost 68-65.

McFarland, the senior point guard, leads the Rebels with 16.2 points and 6.2 assists per game. Junior forward Tia Faleru is adding 15.6 points and 9.4 rebounsds.

MSU is led by forward Martha Alwal with 15.6 points and 8.3 rebounds, while Kendra Grant is averaging 12.5 points.

The Bulldogs had won six straight in the series before Ole Miss won the last meeting.
