Ole Miss freshman outside hitter Whitney Craven picked up a pair of honors this week, as she was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the final weekend of the regular season and also was named to the freshman All-SEC team.
The Louisville, Ky., native helped lead the Rebels to a 3-2 win over Arkansas in the regular season finale last Wednesday, posting her fourth double-double (13 kills, a season-high 22 digs) of the season.
Her selection to the All-Freshman team marks the third year in a row for an Ole Miss player to be honored, joining Regina Thomas (2008) and Jackie Jones (2007).
Despite missing two weeks with injury at the start of conference play, Craven tallied 218 kills and 199 digs in her freshman campaign.
– SEC in the NCAAs: Four SEC teams, three from the Eastern Division, will play first-round NCAA tournmament matches at home on Friday.
SEC overall champion LSU (24-6) will play Tulane. LSU is a No. 15 seed in the tournament.
Elsewhere, Florida (23-5) will host College of Charleston, Kentucky (27-4) wil host Michigan State and Tennessee (23-7) will face Duke.
Only the Pac-10 (8), Big 12 (6), Big Ten (6) and Atlantic Coast (5) conferences got more teams in the NCAA field than the SEC. Penn State (32-0) is the tournament’s top seed, while Texas (24-1) is No. 2.
