Oxford shaved 17 strokes off its first-day total at the Ole Miss Golf Course and won the MHSAA Class 5A state golf championship on Thursday.
The Chargers beat second-place West Jones by nine strokes, 629-638, the same margin they held after the opening 18 holes.
Turner Arnold shot a 2-over-par 74 Thursday to lead the way, 10 strokes better than his Wednesday score. Ben Hubbard totaled the best two-day total of 154. Ward Tolar shot a 76 Wednesday for a two-day 156. Beau Ryals shot back-to-back 81s, Ethan Holmes a two-day 168.
Starkville finished eighth in the 12-team field. Cameron Maddox had the best two days for the Jackets (87-86-173).
4A ENDS QUICKLY
The Class 4A state tournament at Oaks GC in Pass Christian was cut back to one round due to rain. Lewisburg edged St. Stanislaus by three strokes for the team title.
Corinth tied Kosciusko for fourth.
North Pike’s Jonathan Newman won with a 75. Pontotoc’s Denver Russell shot a 78 and finished third in a scorecard playoff.
BELMONT FOURTH IN 3A
Belmont finished fourth of six teams in Class 3A at Madison’s Lake Caroline. Colin Harris shot a two-day 179 for the Cardinals.
