The Pontotoc girls cross-country team finished 1st overall at the Hickory Flat Invitational cross country meet Saturday, which comes after a first overall finish last week at Mississippi College. The boys finished first in 4A and second overall after winning the overall a week ago. Both junior high teams finished 3rd.

The Lady Warriors placed 6sixrunners in the top 10 and eight in the top 20. “The girls had a good meet Saturday and raced well together,” said coach Mike Bain. “This is a very competitive group of girls who battle each other each week in practice, and that makes them better as a team. None of these girls are satisfied with where they are and want to get better each week.”

Chris Grisham was the top runner for the boys and finished second overall with a time of 18:02, followed by Jacob Ferguson (4th), Grayson Griffith (7th), Will Dauler, Mack Warren, Wesley Fuqua, Bo Adams, Clark Owen, Sal Aydha, Ian Gilbreath , Blake Gregory and Wyatt Abbott. The boys had 3 runners in the top 10 and 4 in the top 20.

“What is helping the boys right now is our top guys are racing well and finishing in the top 10,” said Bain. “Mack Warren was our 5th runner Saturday and ran well enough for us to finish 1st in 4A. These guys know how important that 5th runner is and are racing hard to make a difference.”
