STARKVILLE – Mississippi State senior first baseman Connor Powers and sophomore pitcher Nick Routt have garnered preseason all-conference honors by Southeastern Baseball. The MSU duo represented State on SEBaseball.com’s second-team All-Southeastern Conference unit announced by the Atlanta-based internet publication.
Connors, from Naperville, Ill., hit .301 and led MSU with 15 doubles, 19 home runs and 63 RBI and was later drafted in the 11th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He enters this weekend’s season-opening series against Rhode Island (Feb. 19-21) with a .315 career batting average and 38 home runs, ninth-most in a career at State.
Routt earned SEC All-Freshman honors in 2009, leading the Bulldogs with five wins, a 4.15 earned run average and 87 strikeouts in 86.2 innings pitched.
SEBaseball.com picked defending SEC co-champion to win the 2010 SEC Western Division and overall league titles and tabbed Florida as its favorite in the SEC Eastern Division.
The MSU-Rhode Island series at Dudy Noble Field launches a 13-game home stand for State.
