PREP NOTEBOOK: Journal’s top 3 teams in Robertson’s event

Daily Journal

The Daily Journal’s top three girls teams take the court Saturday at Pontotoc High School in the Robertson’s Lady Challenge.

“This is probably the toughest schedule I’ve had the opportunity to try to put together,” organizer Darrell Robertson said. “So many teams are equally matched. It’s hard to match the best combinations.”

No. 1 Tupelo plays Memphis Central at 3:15 p.m. No. 2 Pontotoc faces Hoover, Ala. at 6 and No. 3 Itawamba AHS plays New Hope in the 8:30 finale.

“Itawamba-New Hope is going to be a knock-down-drag-out game,” Robertson said. “Both teams are very physical, very athletic. I think Tupelo is going to be tested in its game.

“You can’t ask for any better matchups. Everybody’s going to be tested.”

At 2, Belmont takes on East Webster and Lady Wolves’ junior Quantesha Patterson. Patterson has been selected to play in March’s North-South All-Star Game.

Former Tupelo coach Stephanie Murphy’s Brandon team takes on 6A Alabama contender, Shades Valley at 4:30.

An out-of-area matchup to keep an eye on is Briarcrest, Tenn. vs. Red Bay, Ala. Briarcrest is 20-3 and features Nebraska-commit Jasmine Cincore. Red Bay is 23-2.

All day tickets are $5.

Here’s the schedule:

Biggersville vs. East Union, 10 a.m.

Ingomar vs. Falkner, 11:15 a.m.

Starkville Academy vs. MHEA, 12:30 p.m.

Belmont vs. East Webster, 2 p.m.

Tupelo vs. Memphis Central, 3:15 p.m.

Brandon vs. Shades Valley, Ala., 4:30 p.m.

Pontotoc vs. Hoover, Ala., 6 p.m.

Briarcrest vs. Red Bay, Ala., 7:15 p.m.

Itawamba AHS vs. New Hope, 8:30 p.m.
