WEST POINT – Do-it-all quarterback Tez Lane made sure he had a memorable Senior Night for West Point.
The senior’s performance also helped the Green Wave return to norm and capture Division 1-5A with a 35-21 victory over Oxford.
Lane rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns and also threw for another to help the Green Wave win their sixth straight game. West Point moved to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the region while Oxford (9-1, 5-1) dropped its first game of the season.
“I had in my mind that I had to go hard,” said Lane. “It was Senior Night and you never know, it could’ve been my last game at home. So I knew I had to go all out and have no regrets.”
Oxford actually jumped to a 14-7 lead in the opening quarter thanks to a pair of Parker Adamson touchdown passes to Nick Brown. But after the second TD pass, the Chargers tried an onsides kick and it backfired.
Thanks to the efforts of Lane, the Green Wave produced 28 points in the second quarter alone en route to a 35-14 halftime advantage. Lane accounted for three of those touchdowns, including an 85-yard dash and score with 1:28 left in the first half.
Lane also got West Point on the board in the first quarter with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Terence Minor on the opening play from scrimmage.
Born to run
West Point totaled 236 rushing yards in the first half and finished with 351 rushing yards.
“Every play was crucial in that game,” said West Point head coach Chris Chambless. “We had some injuries tonight and we have to wait and see on some of those injuries. But we had some young guys go in and play pretty good and that was good to see.
“We’ve got to learn to finish a little better but hey, we won and a win is a win. We still have to play four complete quarters but I am proud of our guys. One of our goals was to win district and we did.”
Oxford finished with 423 yards of offense and got 267 yards passing from Adamson and 150 yards rushing from junior tailback Jarious Barnes. But the Chargers managed just seven points in four trips to the red zone.
