Rebel women's basketball win streak snapped at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Valerie Nainima scored 17 points and hit five three-pointers and South Carolina snapped Ole Miss’ five-game winning streak with a 64-50 victory Thursday night from Colonial Life Arena.

La’Keisha Sutton added 12 points for the Gamecocks, while Charenee Stephens tallied 12 points. Freshman post Kelsey Bone finished with 11 points.

Rebel guard Kayla Melson scored 17 points and had assists, and Shantell Black finished in double figures with 11 points.

Ole Miss (14-6, 5-2 SEC) fought to within eight points with just under eight minutes to play on a basket by Nikki Byrd, but Nainimi answered with a three-pointer in the corner on the following play to up the South Carolina lead to 11 points.

Melson hit a jump shot in the lane with just over four minutes to play to once again pull Ole Miss within eight points. South Carolina, however, responded on the other end with a layup from Stephens to give the Gamecocks at 58-48.

The Rebels managed just two more points over the final 3:22 and South Carolina closed the contest with six straight points, including five from Bone, to improve to 11-9 overall and 4-4 inside the conference.

Ole Miss returns to action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Rebels host Florida from Tad Smith Coliseum.
