Rebels knock off UC-Irvine, will face No. 11 UCLA today in NCAA tennis

LOS ANGELES – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team downed UC Irvine 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday.
The Rebels (13-9) take on host UCLA today at 5 p.m., for the right to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
UCLA downed Binghamton 4-0 to reach the second round.
Ole Miss won all three doubles matches and went 5-1 in singles play.
Rebel Chris Thiemann downed UCI’s Ryan Cheung 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to win his 10th dual match of the season.
Freshman Johan Backstrom, playing in his first NCAA match, beat Shan Sondhu 6-4, 6-3 while Tucker Vorster topped UCI’s Sam Gould 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the victory.
