Rowland tied for second at NJCAA D-II golf tourney

PHOENIX – Alex Rowland of ICC was tied for second after Tuesday’s first round of the NJCAA Division II national golf tournament.
Rowland shot a 2-under par 70 at Palm Valley Golf Club and was two strokes off the lead. The Houston native was the state top-ranked community college golfer during the regular season and came into the event ranked 15th nationally.
Northeast’s Blake Hatfield shot a 73 and was third for 19th. Hatfield, from Booneville, won the MACJC individual title and was ranked 24th nationally.
The four-round tourney runs through Friday.
Lex Rutledge, a freshman from Tupelo, has tied the Samford single-season save mark with 11. That total ties him for No. 8 on the NCAA’s national saves list.
He could break the record as early as tonight, as Samford opens a three-game series at Southern Conference rival Elon (N.C.) University.
Rutledge threw two innings of one-hit relief on Sunday in an 8-5 win against Western Carolina for his 11th save. He’s 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 43 innings.
