Five Northeast Mississippi teams will be hosting slow-pitch softball quarterfinals series today, including defending MHSAA Class 3A, 2A and 1A state champions Nettleton, Hamilton and West Union, respectively.
Nettleton, which finished second in its division to South Pontotoc, will host Independence this afternoon at 1 p.m in a Class 3A best-of-three quarterfinals series. Meanwhile, South Pontotoc will travel to Winona to play its quarterfinals series beginning at 4 p.m. today.
In Class 2A, Hamilton will be at home versus East Webster, and Game 1 is set for 2 this afternoon. In the other North 2A series, Mantachie will play at Eupora beginning at 1 p.m.
Four area teams will be playing in the North 1A series, with Wheeler playing at Myrtle and West Union hosting Smithville. The Wheeler-Myrtle series starts at noon while the Smithville-West Union one gets underway at 2 p.m.
“Smithville’s always competitive,” said West Union coach Lisa Bogue. “We grew into being rivals more or less. The North usually comes down to the same four teams: Wheeler, Myrtle, Smithville and us.”
As far as the area’s biggest schools go, Class 6A Tupelo will play at Madison Central, Saltillo will host Pearl in 5A and Houston will travel to Newton County and Amory will be at West Lauderdale for their 4A series.
