There are three new state high school championship teams from Northeast Mississippi.
Smithville’s fastpitch softball team won a pair of games on Saturday at Ridgeland to claim the MHSAA Class 1A state championship.
Smithville became the first Monroe County team to win a slowpitch and fastpitch state title in the same season.
In Class 4A softball, Houston beat defending champion Newton County 5-3 on Saturday to sweep its way to the state championship.
And in Class 2A baseball in Jackson, Bruce beat defending state champion Taylorsville 7-3 to complete a sweep.
Smithville’s Lady Seminoles (23-10) won Saturday’s first game 2-0 and the title-clinching victory by a 7-2 margin.
It’s a dramatic turn of events for a Smithville team that had its playing field, along with many other school facilities, destroyed by last year’s tornado.
In the 4A series, Houston stunned Newton County 10-7 in Friday’s opener.
Houston completed the season with a 34-2 record.
