MOOREVILLE – After watching his team struggle at the plate Thursday, Mooreville coach Perry Wilburn was hoping to see things turnaround for the Lady Troopers on Saturday.
Mooreville responded by scattering eight hits to take a 6-3 series-clinching victory over the Houston Lady Hilltoppers to advance to the Class 3A fastpitch softball semifinals against Nettleton.
“We hit the ball well today and played good defense again,” Wilburn said.
Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first, but Mooreville answered with four runs on hits by Victoria White and Lauren Lewis.
Mooreville added runs in the second off a Kelsey Miller double and in the fourth on a single from Laura Mitchell.
– Smithville 14, West Union 7: Kami Roberts had three hits and was the winning pitcher for Smithville.
East Webster 5-11, Stringer 4-1: The Lady Wolverines swept their South Mississippi 1A quarterfinalr.
– Houlka 7, Vardaman 5: Houlka advanced to the state semifinals series against Smithville with a big bottom of the fifth.
– Hatley 4, Ackerman 0: Hatley, behind the three-hit pitching of Lesley Hudson, blanked Ackerman and will play Hamilton, which wrapped up its series with a 9-7 win against Eupora.
