STARKVILLE — Nick Zaharion and Dustin Dalken combined to drive in seven runs to lead second-seeded South Alabama past third-seeded Mercer for a 9-4 victory in the opening round of an NCAA regional Friday.
South Alabama (43-18) opened the game with a three-run first inning on Zaharion’s sacrifice fly and Dalken’s two-run single. Zaharion singled in another run in the second inning.
Down 4-0, Mercer (43-17) scored one run in the top of the fifth inning, but South Alabama responded with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, including two on another single by Dalken. Five South Alabama players had at least two hits.
South Alabama starter Anthony Izzio (4-0) earned the win, giving up just one run on seven hits over six innings. Mercer starter Brandon Barker (7-2) only managed to get one out before getting the quick hook, giving up three runs for the loss.
